An 11-year-old girl is currently in critical condition at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland after being shot in the head by a stranger while inside her father’s vehicle.
The incident occurred around 12:40 pm on Monday in the apartment complex parking lot. The girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, was seated in the front passenger seat when the unexpected gunfire erupted.
Police have identified the shooter as Ryan Hardy, who allegedly fired randomly at innocent bystanders, causing a bullet to penetrate the car and strike the child’s head. The victim’s father shared that her initial words after the incident were heartbreaking, questioning why she couldn’t see.
A bullet shattered the back windshield, pierced the headrest, and hit the girl at the back of her head. The father expressed deep sorrow and fear, emphasizing the impact of the shooting on his family.
Ryan Hardy, 23, is the prime suspect, declared armed and dangerous by authorities. The police urged the public not to approach him and to report any information on his whereabouts immediately.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by relatives to support the family as they plan to permanently leave Antioch for safety concerns, leaving behind their residence, jobs, and community.
The fundraiser highlights the extensive medical treatment, therapy, and emotional recovery needed for the girl, with uncertain expectations regarding her future functionality.
The family’s dire circumstances have led them to seek assistance, with donations exceeding $7,800 to aid in relocation expenses, lost income, emergency living costs, and ongoing medical requirements.
