A young woman shared her harrowing experience of suffering from severe skin issues caused by the use of prescribed steroid cream for eczema. Sophie Cooper, 21, saw her condition worsen drastically after using the cream as advised by her GP. Despite completing three rounds of progressively stronger steroid creams, her skin remained inflamed and itchy, leading her to discontinue use.
Subsequently, Sophie faced the challenge of topical steroid withdrawal, a condition triggered by stopping the use of steroid cream. Unaware of this potential reaction, she found herself in excruciating pain as red, sore patches covered 95% of her body. Even after being off the creams for 18 months, Sophie’s daily life has been severely impacted, preventing her from working and making basic activities like showering unbearable.
Despite her struggles, Sophie remains resilient and has become a finalist in the Miss Great Britain Kent competition. She is determined not to let her skin condition hold her back. With her story gaining traction on social media platforms like TikTok, where the issue of topical steroid withdrawal is widely discussed, Sophie hopes to raise awareness and support others facing similar challenges.
However, Sophie’s journey has been fraught with physical and emotional pain, with her skin condition causing insomnia, nerve pain, and difficulties in everyday tasks. She emphasizes the need for more research and awareness about the risks associated with steroid creams and hopes to empower others in similar situations.
To assist Sophie in her recovery, donations can be made through her JustGiving page. Despite the hardships she faces, Sophie’s resilience and determination shine through as she refuses to let her skin condition define her.
