A woman, now 42 years old, was discovered in an extremely weakened state, believed to be on the brink of death, following allegations that her parents had confined her to her room for a duration of 27 years.
The woman, known only as Mirrella, was last seen publicly in 1998 at the age of 15 in Świętochłowice, a city located in southern Poland, and had not been seen since then.
Initially, locals were informed that the teenager had disappeared without a trace. Nearly three decades later, she was found in a dire state, having never sought dental or hair care.
Concern arose in July when law enforcement responded to a disturbance call from neighbors at a residential building.
Deputy Inspector Anna Hryniak, speaking to Polish publication Fakt, stated that the 82-year-old landlady denied any altercation had taken place.
Upon questioning Mirrella, she denied any issues, but her injuries prompted law enforcement to seek medical assistance for her.
Local residents initiated a fundraising campaign to aid the woman, with one individual sharing on social media: “Medical professionals determined that she was close to death due to an infection. She has been in a hospital for two months due to her critical condition.
“People who were acquainted with Mirella believed she had left her family home almost 30 years ago. Unfortunately, the reality was different. Many details are still unknown, and certain facts cannot be disclosed at this point. However, it is essential to uncover the reasons why this once healthy 15-year-old stopped venturing outside and vanished without a trace.
“It is unimaginable to spend such an extended period confined to a single room. She herself admits she has not witnessed the development of her city, feels disconnected from society, missed out on numerous experiences, never had access to basic services like medical care or even a simple outing.”
“She has never received dental or hair treatments. Her dental and hair conditions are critical, posing a threat to her health, necessitating visits to a private clinic.”
Prosecutor Agnieszka Kwatera confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
This incident follows the rescue of a six-year-old girl in September, who had been confined to her room since birth. The child, discovered in a severely neglected state, was removed from her parents’ custody after authorities received an anonymous tip concerning her well-being.
Law enforcement officers found the young girl in a dark and unsanitary room with only a teddy bear. She had been solely fed liquids, never attended school, and lacked basic language skills.
