As Quebec celebrates pride month, political candidates from sexual and gender-diverse backgrounds participating in the upcoming provincial election are raising concerns about a surge in hateful messages directed at them. Québec solidaire has reported a significant increase in online hate specifically targeting its 2SLGBTQ+ candidates.
Roxane Milot, the party president and candidate in a Montreal riding, expressed worries about the escalating online violence, emphasizing the need for caution in rhetoric among all candidates and party leaders. Milot, who is bisexual, highlighted the detrimental impact of such attacks on marginalized candidates, citing a reluctance among individuals from diverse backgrounds, including queer, women, and racialized individuals, to enter politics due to the intensifying hostility.
Recent incidents, including the withdrawal of candidate Vanessa Durand from Québec solidaire after making derogatory remarks toward Parti Québécois supporters from 2SLGBTQ+ communities, have underscored the severity of the issue. Philippe Schnobb, a Parti Québécois candidate, also disclosed receiving homophobic hate messages and threats, emphasizing the distressing nature of such comments.
Despite facing intolerable remarks and threats, Schnobb has refrained from pursuing legal action at this time, urging for a more respectful discourse as the election approaches. The prevalence of homophobic and transphobic comments in politics has become a shared concern across major political parties, with instances reported even among candidates not directly affiliated with the sexual and gender diversity community.
Charles Milliard, the Liberal Leader who is openly gay, has faced discriminatory remarks as well, highlighting the need for inclusivity and respect in the political sphere. Various parties have implemented support mechanisms and training programs to assist candidates in dealing with online violence and ensuring their well-being during the electoral process.
