“£35 Million Cold Weather Payments Aid Residents in England and Wales”

Date:

Nearly 1.5 million households in England and Wales have already been granted cold weather payments this winter, as confirmed by the government. These payments, amounting to £25 each, are issued when the average temperature in a specific postcode area reaches or is forecasted to be zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. The recent freezing conditions in early 2026 have led to additional payments being distributed to eligible households.

Triggered by temperatures dropping below zero at over 30 Met Office weather stations nationwide, approximately 1.4 million cold weather payments were distributed last winter. The Department for Work and Pensions reports that over £35 million has been allocated to vulnerable households across England and Wales this winter under the scheme running from November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

Eligibility for Cold Weather Payments is typically tied to receiving Pension Credit. However, individuals receiving Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Support for Mortgage Interest may also qualify based on additional criteria such as employment status, health conditions, disabilities, or caregiving responsibilities for young or disabled children.

In contrast to England and Wales, residents in Scotland do not receive Cold Weather Payments but may be eligible for an annual Winter Heating Payment instead. Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasized the importance of this support for vulnerable households during extreme cold weather. He highlighted the various measures in place, including a higher National Living Wage, energy bill discounts, and a Winter Fuel Payment for over nine million pensioners, to alleviate the financial burden on households nationwide.

Pensioners with low incomes are encouraged to apply for Pension Credit as it offers access to various support services, including assistance with housing expenses, free NHS dental care, council tax reductions, help with energy bills, and a free TV license for those over 75. Despite this, statistics from 2023/24 revealed that a significant number of eligible pensioners are not claiming Pension Credit, missing out on substantial financial aid annually.

Morgan Vine, director of policy and influencing at Independent Age, stressed the importance of Cold Weather Payments as a crucial lifeline during cold spells. With many older individuals expressing concerns about heating costs, the £35 million investment from the UK Government aims to provide essential support to those in need, especially older people with limited incomes. Vine expressed readiness to collaborate with the government to ensure that financial assistance reaches older individuals in need.
