“41-Year-Old Man Crashes into US Synagogue, Fatally Shot”

Date:

Authorities have identified the individual who intentionally drove his vehicle into a US synagogue as a 41-year-old man born in Lebanon named Ayman Mohamad Ghazali. The incident occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday, March 12, resulting in Ghazali being fatally shot by security officers after crashing his vehicle and causing a fire.

Fortunately, none of the synagogue’s staff, teachers, or the 140 children present at the early childhood center were harmed during the attack.

Ghazali immigrated to the US in 2011 through a visa sponsorship as the spouse of a US citizen and was granted citizenship in 2016, as confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the incident, which is being described as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community by Jennifer Runyan, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office. The motive behind the attack at one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues is yet to be determined.

Smoke engulfed the synagogue following the attack, prompting concerns and fears among parents for the safety of their children. Despite a security officer being struck and rendered unconscious by the vehicle, no life-threatening injuries were reported. Additionally, around 30 law enforcement officers received treatment for smoke inhalation.

Temple security personnel successfully neutralized the threat posed by Ghazali, who was found deceased inside his vehicle at the scene.

Eyewitnesses, including Cassi Cohen, director of strategic development at Temple Israel, recounted the chaos and immediate response to the crash. Cohen mentioned the presence of children and staff near the impact site, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in such situations due to past active shooter drills.

Rabbi Arianna Gordon expressed gratitude towards the security team, law enforcement, and early childhood teachers for their swift actions in evacuating and reuniting the children with their families following the incident.

Parents rushed to collect their children once the building was deemed safe, with some families reuniting at a nearby Jewish Community Center. Allison Jacobs, a parent of a child enrolled in the synagogue’s day care, shared her shock and relief upon receiving confirmation of her daughter’s safety amid the unsettling events.

In a statement to the press, Jacobs reflected on the unexpected nature of such incidents, emphasizing the impact of global events on personal perceptions of safety and security.
