Sixty-seven individuals have been rescued while several others remain unaccounted for following the sinking of a ferry carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew members.
Among the survivors recovered after the MV Barima overturned near the coast of Guyana are fifteen children. The incident occurred as the vessel was en route from the capital city of Georgetown, prompting a distress call at 11:03 pm local time.
A search and rescue operation was swiftly initiated, involving both government teams and privately-owned boats, as stated by Public Works Minister Juan Edghill. Efforts continued throughout Sunday, with hopes of locating all individuals who were on board.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed that the rescued individuals include 41 men, 11 women, and the boat’s captain. The captain has since reengaged in the intensified search operation, which expanded significantly on Sunday.
Phillips also verified that the ferry was operating within its designated weight limit at the time of the incident, as it was authorized to accommodate over 300 passengers. Once medical assessments and rescue missions are finalized, the identities of the passengers will be disclosed.
