“7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Warning in Mexico & Guatemala”

Date:

A tsunami warning has been issued following a significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck near the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala. Residents within 300km of the epicenter, located off the coast of Puerto Madero in Chiapas, have been advised to be prepared. The earthquake, occurring at a depth of 10km, has raised concerns about possible hazardous tsunami waves along the coastline.

The seismic event, which occurred at 8.48am local time southwest of Huixtla, Chiapas, has led to evacuations in Guatemala City. The National Seismological Service has confirmed the earthquake’s location and intensity. The National Coordination of Civil Protection is actively assessing the situation to gauge potential damage.

Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt in neighboring countries like El Salvador, alongside Mexico and Guatemala. Evacuations have been carried out in Mexico as a precautionary measure. Both US and Mexican tsunami warning centers have issued alerts following the earthquake’s impact.

The epicenter of the earthquake is situated 71km west-southwest of Puerto Madero, affecting both Mexican and Guatemalan territories. Mexico, located in a seismic zone with multiple tectonic plates beneath its surface, faces a continuous risk of earthquakes due to the interaction between the Caribbean, North American, Pacific, Rivera, and Cocos plates.

Authorities have emphasized the potential threat of hazardous tsunami waves for coastal areas within a 300km radius of the earthquake epicenter near Puerto Madero, Chiapas, Mexico.
