Following a significant earthquake near Mindanao, the Philippines, a tsunami alert has been issued for the region, as confirmed by the US Tsunami Warning System. The earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.8, struck Davao City just before 7:40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has lifted its tsunami watch for the country’s coast and territories. The cancellation, announced by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 10:38 am AEST, followed an undersea earthquake of 7.8 magnitude near Mindanao, Philippines.
The BoM statement assured that no tsunami threats were detected for Australia’s mainland, islands, or territories, leading to the cancellation of the tsunami watch. Updates will only be provided if the situation changes.
Notably, a video captured the Plaza building’s collapse in Sarangani, which houses LOVE Radio Gensan and DZRH News FM. The scene shows bystanders on the street, just meters away, reacting with fear as dust clouds fill the air.
