The parents of a seven-year-old boy, who weighed 255 pounds (116 kilograms) at the time of his death, are facing charges of murder, torture, and child abuse, according to prosecutors.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton stated that the child, Casper O’Brien, did not receive proper nutrition and died last November in Flint. His parents, Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and three counts of second-degree child abuse.
The couple, currently held without bond in Genesee County, are awaiting a probable cause hearing set for Thursday. Casper, who was medically classified as obese, passed away due to dilated cardiomyopathy, with his weight as a contributing factor.
Despite having access to healthcare, the parents allegedly neglected to seek medical attention for Casper. Attorney Elias Fanous, representing Damien O’Brien, emphasized his client’s presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.
Authorities suspect that Casper primarily consumed unhealthy snack foods, leading to severe health issues including bed sores and rashes. The autopsy report revealed unsanitary conditions in the home, with the child also not attending school.
One of the child abuse charges involves the couple’s 5-year-old daughter, who has been placed in foster care. Casper’s medical history indicated a past visit where his weight was significantly lower, but the necessary follow-up care was reportedly not pursued.
Prosecutor Leyton expressed deep sorrow over the tragic circumstances, highlighting the severity of the case and the neglect the child suffered.
