“£10M Boost for Mosque Security Against Hate Crimes”

Date:

Keir Starmer has unveiled additional funding for mosque security following his recent visit to a mosque that was the target of a suspected arson attack.

The government has announced a £10 million allocation to enhance security at mosques and Muslim faith centers to safeguard them against hate crimes and assaults. This funding injection will support security enhancements such as CCTV installations, alarm systems, secure fencing, and security personnel.

The announcement coincided with Mr. Starmer’s visit to Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, where he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. The fire incident on October 4, which caused damage to the mosque’s front entrance and a vehicle, did not result in any injuries. Sussex Police confirmed the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incident.

Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of unity and tolerance, stating, “Attacks on any community threaten our nation and values as a whole. This funding will offer Muslim communities the necessary protection to live in peace and security. Our government is dedicated to creating a safer environment for all, which includes safeguarding places of worship from those who aim to sow division through hate and violence.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also condemned the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque, highlighting the right to practice one’s faith freely and live without fear or hatred. She emphasized the need to stand together against violence and intimidation directed at any community or faith.

Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding, emphasizing the importance of freedom of religious belief in British society. She noted the unfortunate reality that many members of Muslim communities live in fear and apprehension due to attacks on their mosques, places that symbolize faith, love, and peace, through vandalism and abuse.

This initiative aims to promote inclusivity, safety, and harmony within communities.
