“Ryanair Launches New London-Murcia Route: Spain’s Hidden Gem Awaits”

Date:

Ryanair has introduced a fresh non-stop route from London Stansted to a Spanish city known as an ‘underrated’ and ‘hidden gem.’

The low-cost carrier is commencing a London to Murcia service four times weekly, with the flight duration just under three hours. Positioned in Spain’s southeast, Murcia is a less explored region, located slightly over an hour away from Alicante. Upon arrival, travelers can opt to tour the city or head to the nearby coastline.

The timing of this new route is ideal for those seeking a break from the autumn climate. Murcia has experienced temperatures reaching 31C this week and can hit up to 21C in November. While December and January are not the warmest months, with daytime highs of 18C and 17C respectively, the weather is generally mild with low precipitation. It is advisable to pack warm sleepwear as evenings can get chilly.

Murcia boasts a plethora of activities appealing to history enthusiasts, having been inhabited by both Romans and Moors. Visitors can explore landmarks like the grand Gothic Murcia Cathedral and the Santa Clara Museum, originally a Muslim palace converted into a Monastery in the 14th century.

The city also houses various museums, including the Museo Arqueológico de Murcia showcasing valuable artifacts and the Salzillo Museum dedicated to Francisco Salzillo, a renowned local sculptor of dramatic religious pieces.

Murcia offers excellent shopping opportunities. The expansive Centro Comercial Nueva Condomina features prominent Spanish and European brands like Bershka and Zara, while Centro De Artesania De Murcia offers handcrafted artisanal products ideal for gifting. National Geographic has labeled Murcia as ‘underrated.’

A short distance from the airport lies the port city of Cartagena, famous for its Roman Amphitheatre. Cartagena is rich in historical attractions such as the Roman Forum Museum and the Punic wall dating back to the 3rd century BC.

Cartagena is also an ideal destination for a beach retreat. Cala Cortina, an unspoiled beach surrounded by rugged cliffs, offers soft sand and calm waters suitable for swimming.

Another beach spot near Murcia is La Manga, just over half an hour away from the airport. This unique location stretches 13 miles in length but is only 100 meters wide, bordered by a lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors can enjoy the long sandy beach with most hotel rooms offering sea or lagoon views. The area also features a sizable marina with numerous dining options and boat rental services for water activities.

Whether planning a city escapade or a beach vacation, considering Murcia over more mainstream Spanish cities is advisable. Despite its historical allure and close proximity to stunning beaches, Murcia only welcomed 1.16 million visitors last year compared to Barcelona’s 26 million. Tourist numbers are increasing, so seizing the opportunity to visit before it becomes overcrowded is recommended.

Direct flights to Murcia from various UK airports are available this October starting from £15.
