“Poundland Halts Store Closures, Revamps Pricing”

Date:

Poundland has updated its store closure plans, revealing that 11 closures previously announced have been put on hold. This decision follows the recent acquisition of Poundland by investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal fee of £1.

Among the locations no longer facing closure is the Poundland store at Irvine Rivergate Centre, which had been scheduled to shut down on September 14. Additionally, planned closures in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) have also been postponed.

Another closure in Whitby has been canceled after Poundland reached an agreement with the landlord. The company maintains its expectation to reduce its number of stores to around 650 to 700 as leases expire, down from the initial 800 branches.

Despite the reprieve for some stores, Poundland will still proceed with the closure of six locations on September 28 in Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley, and Uttoxeter as part of the original closure list.

Poundland’s managing director, Barry Williams, expressed determination to streamline operations and maintain value for customers. The company is implementing a simplified pricing structure, offering products at £1, £2, and £3 in UK stores. The majority of grocery items will be priced at £1, with a portion at £2 and £3.

In addition, Poundland has updated its website to showcase products only, discontinuing online purchases. The Poundland Perks loyalty app will also be shut down, although existing vouchers can be used until January 15, 2026.

The changes come as Poundland focuses on delivering value to customers while adapting to evolving market dynamics.
