A tragic incident unfolded in Rome as a tourist, identified as Morimasa Hibino, a Japanese national, fell to his death from the Pantheon’s perimeter wall. The 69-year-old lost his balance and plummeted approximately 22 feet in front of his daughter at around 9:50pm local time. The authorities were notified by a passing priest who discovered the man in a ditch. Despite the swift response of emergency services and firefighters, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officials are currently delving into the circumstances of the fatal fall. Reports indicate that the man was seated on the wall before the accident occurred. CCTV footage capturing the area where the incident transpired has been secured as part of the investigation. The man’s daughter informed the police that her father fell due to a sudden illness, leaving her devastated by the tragic event.
The Pantheon, a renowned ancient monument in Rome functioning as a church and a popular tourist spot, was the backdrop of this recent tragedy. This incident comes on the heels of a previous mishap involving an American tourist living in Taiwan who impaled himself on a metal fence at the Colosseum while attempting to take a selfie. The tourist, a 47-year-old US citizen, slipped and fell onto a sharp metal spike, resulting in a serious injury to his spine. He was rushed to San Giovanni Hospital in critical condition for urgent surgery and is currently reported to be in a serious but stable state.
