“Mother’s Journey with Son’s Autism Transforms with Community Support”

Date:

A mother shared how her life took a sudden turn when an employee at her son’s childcare center observed something unusual about him. Mounika Vemula expressed deep sorrow upon hearing that her son, Devaansh, might have autism, a term she was unfamiliar with until then. Working at a financial institution, Mounika described the initial days after the diagnosis as daunting.

She recounted the moment when a nursery staff member gently hinted at a potential difference in her son, leaving her bewildered. The onset of the Covid lockdown coincided with this revelation, intensifying the challenges she faced.

In an interview with BirminghamLive, Mounika disclosed that Devaansh is diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and a learning disability, collectively falling under Neurodiversity. She emphasized the significance of understanding individuals with these conditions, referred to as Neurodivergents, highlighting Devaansh as her world.

According to the NHS, autism is not categorized as an illness but rather as a condition where the brain functions uniquely. Mounika shared the complexities of raising a child with special needs, particularly due to Devaansh’s hyperactivity and reliance on routines.

Her struggles found solace when she connected with the Birmingham-based autism support group Bridging Brains CIC, founded by Dr. Anuradha Uppaluri and Dr. Hari Krovvidi. The group, rooted in the local Telugu community, offers diverse activities for families dealing with autism.

Mounika praised the group for transforming her life, enabling her to engage in regular sessions and workshops. She highlighted the emotional support and camaraderie she found within the group, underscoring the positive impact on her and Devaansh’s well-being.

She noted that Devaansh now finds joy in activities like painting, arts and crafts, and music and dance sessions, reflecting a newfound sense of happiness.
