Outspoken former judge on Britain’s Got Talent, Piers Morgan, is known for advocating free speech. Despite this, there have been instances where the ex-Daily Mirror editor may have been too straightforward.
Morgan revealed that just before his meeting with President Donald Trump, he found out that Trump had received a document containing all the negative comments Morgan had made about him.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Morgan recalled the tense moment: “Donald Trump was visibly upset with me. He went through the criticisms one by one: ‘Did you refer to me as a mob boss? Did you suggest I should never run for office again? How could you say these things about me, my apprentice?'”
Realizing that Nigel Farage, who had launched a competing show on GB News, had likely shared the dossier with Trump to disrupt the interview, Morgan needed a quick solution to salvage the situation.
Feeling the pressure, Morgan decided that praising Trump was the best way forward: “I was nervous, thinking the interview was doomed – how would I launch my show now? It was a disaster. Ironically, I improvised as I would on Celebrity Apprentice: ‘How can I turn this around? How can I control the situation?’ In the end, golf came to my rescue.”
Trump is well-known for his love of golf. Since his inauguration in 2025, he has spent around 38 days on the golf course out of a total of 280 days in office, which is approximately 13% of his time as president so far.
Luckily, Morgan had recently read an interview with golfing legend Ernie Els, who had played golf with Trump and reported that Trump had scored a hole in one during their game. Morgan decided to focus on this positive event rather than delving into Trump’s political controversies.
Morgan recounted: “I brought up the topic of your hole in one.’ Everyone’s talking about it.’ Trump’s demeanor immediately shifted, and he agreed to proceed with the interview.”
Although saved by the golf anecdote, Morgan hasn’t forgotten Farage’s betrayal, calling the Reform leader a “treacherous weasel.”
Morgan expressed his frustration: “After he interviewed Trump a few months back, I congratulated him via text on the successful interview. How did he repay me? He returned to London and sabotaged my interview.”
These events highlight the intricate dynamics of politics and media interactions, showcasing the importance of strategic communication in delicate situations.
