Commercial flights to a remote airport in the UK have been suspended, leaving the aviation hub stranded. UK domestic airline Eastern Airways has ceased operations and canceled all flights, impacting the Scottish town of Wick, which heavily relied on the airline for connectivity.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority has advised customers not to travel to the airport as Eastern Airways will no longer be operating flights. Although other airlines continue to serve destinations like Aberdeen, Humberside, London Gatwick, Newquay, and Teesside International, Wick John O’Groats Airport, situated at the northernmost tip of mainland UK, remains without service.
Gama Aviation is the only other carrier serving Wick, according to FlightRadar data. The lack of flight operations at Wick Airport has effectively isolated the town and airport by air, posing challenges due to the lengthy train journeys required to reach major cities like London and Glasgow.
Wick, a picturesque coastal town with a rich maritime heritage, attracts tourists for its historic castle ruins, rugged coastline, and diverse wildlife. Notable attractions include Sinclair and Girnigoe castles, Noss Head Lighthouse, and the world’s shortest street, Ebenezer Place, home to Mackay’s Hotel’s No. 1 Bistro.
Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), the owner of Wick John O’Groats Airport, has confirmed that the airport will remain operational despite Eastern Airways’ administration filing. Passengers are advised to make alternative travel arrangements through other airlines, rail, or coach services. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has recommended checking their website for updated information regarding Eastern Airways flights.
