UK Faces Arctic Chill: -2°C Temperatures and Freezing Rain Threat

Date:

Britons are bracing for an impending Arctic chill in the upcoming weeks, with temperatures expected to drop to as low as -2°C. Alongside the cold snap, there is a possibility of hazardous freezing rain and snow.

Following a recent period of mild weather earlier this month, conditions have notably shifted to become colder and more unsettled due to low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic. While some areas may see snowflakes over higher elevations this week, the real chill is anticipated to set in during November.

WXCharts’ maps indicate that temperatures will dip into single digits in early November and plunge below zero by November 12, especially in Scotland where it could hit -2°C. A map for midnight on November 11 shows a likelihood of snow in central and southern Scotland, accompanied by freezing rain highlighted in orange patches.

Freezing rain, a phenomenon where liquid precipitation freezes upon impact with cold surfaces, poses a significant risk, especially for driving conditions. The Met Office describes it as a rare type of precipitation that can instantly turn into ice upon contact with the ground, potentially causing accidents and hazardous road conditions.

The Met Office’s forecast predicts the potential for overnight fog and frost through mid to late November. Initially, the UK can expect unsettled conditions with showers, longer spells of rain, and possible strong winds. Temperatures are forecasted to remain around normal levels.

As November progresses, the weather is expected to become drier and sunnier with occasional fog and frost at night. Wet spells are more likely to affect northern regions, while the overall trend suggests a shift towards more stable weather conditions.

The first ten days of November are anticipated to bring further unsettled weather patterns with heavy rain and strong winds, possibly escalating to severe gales.

The Met Office warns of continued changeable and unsettled weather due to prevailing low pressure systems that could result in showers and periods of rain. Western areas are likely to experience the heaviest rainfall, while drier intervals may occur more frequently in the east. Strong winds, including gales and severe gales, are expected, particularly from westerly or southwesterly directions, potentially bringing above-average temperatures initially and reducing the chances of overnight frost and fog compared to usual conditions.
