“Discover Affordable Alternatives to Expensive Christmas Markets”

Date:

Many people find that enjoying a warm cup of mulled wine at a European Christmas market is a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit. However, these markets can sometimes be expensive affairs.

For instance, a single cup of mulled wine at the Berlin Christmas market could cost you five euros, with an additional three euros if you decide to keep the souvenir mug. Even staying closer to home doesn’t guarantee savings, as UK Christmas markets are known for their high prices.

For example, a visit to the Manchester Christmas markets this year could mean spending around £25 on a beer and a bratwurst. If you’re looking to plan a festive getaway without breaking the bank, exploring some of the lesser-known European Christmas markets might offer more budget-friendly options. These markets are often less crowded than those in the UK, as reported by the Daily Record.

Looking for inspiration? Eurochange has researched the top alternative Christmas markets in Europe, including details on affordable flights from the UK, average hotel expenses, and insights into cities with favorable exchange rates.

Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at Eurochange, highlighted the Christmas market in Wroclaw, Poland, as one of Europe’s best in terms of value for money and an authentic experience. Accommodation for two adults for two nights costs only £47, with food and drinks being very reasonably priced. Sibiu in Romania also ranks high for affordability, offering mulled wine for just 86p.

Laura praised Sibiu as Romania’s premier Christmas market destination, surpassing even Bucharest. The winter celebration, known as ‘The Fair In Sibiu,’ runs from November 14, 2025, to January 4, 2026, attracting crowds with its unique blend of Hungarian, Romanian, and German influences.

The markets in Sibiu, set in the historic old town at Piața Mare, are adorned with thousands of fairy lights and festive decorations, creating a culturally rich atmosphere. Prices are notably reasonable, with mulled wine priced between five to 10 leu (approximately £0.86).

Visitors are encouraged to try local specialties like Kürtőskalács (spit cakes) and cozonac (sweet bread) at the markets. According to Laura, Wroclaw is renowned for hosting one of Poland’s most beautiful Christmas markets, offering a winter wonderland experience spread across various locations in the city.

Stalls at Rynek Market Square, Place Solny, Świdnicka Street, and Oławska Street showcase handcrafted items and delicacies, mostly from independent vendors. Mulled wine is available for 15 PLN (£3.08) with a mug deposit, but visitors can find cheaper options at surrounding establishments.

Innsbruck, as described by Laura, provides a truly festive atmosphere with its Christmas markets, delightful aromas of traditional treats like Kiachln, and the enchanting glow of medieval alleys adorned with fairy lights. The main shopping street, Maria-Theresien Straße, offers additional chalets with tasty snacks and handmade crafts.

Tallinn Christmas market in Estonia is portrayed as a fairytale setting in the heart of the capital, featuring local delicacies and authentic Christmas experiences at affordable prices. The market’s iconic Christmas tree has been a tradition since 1441, making it one of Europe’s oldest.

While Croatia may not be the first choice for a festive getaway, Laura recommends exploring Zagreb’s Christmas market, also known as ‘Advent Zagreb.’ The city transforms into a vibrant hub during the holiday season, offering a festive market, music events, art exhibitions, and an impressive ice-skating rink at King Tromislav Square.
