A man described as a “narcissistic predator” has been sentenced to almost 15 years in jail for raping a 16-year-old girl, whose testimony from beyond the grave played a crucial role in his conviction. Kristian Franks, 35, smirked and wore a T-shirt with “acquitted” written on it during court proceedings. The girl, Leah Bedford, tragically drowned about two weeks after reporting being raped by Franks.
Despite Leah’s untimely death, her detailed account to the police was instrumental in bringing Franks to justice. The police, armed with Leah’s testimony, revisited a previous complaint against Franks made by another woman in 2017. This woman had initially withdrawn her complaint due to threatening behavior from Franks but decided to pursue the case after learning of Leah’s ordeal.
Franks was eventually found guilty of rape by a jury at York Crown Court. The judge, Sean Morris, highlighted Franks’ predatory behavior towards women and the danger he posed. Franks received a sentence of 14 years and nine months, with provisions for an extended period of monitoring even after his potential release.
Leah’s family expressed pride in her courage to report the crime and emphasized the importance of speaking out against perpetrators like Franks.
