Tributes are being honored for a beloved former radio host who went missing while fishing close to a river known for its crocodile population.
Roman Butchaski, a fishing expert renowned for his radio show on Australian airwaves, disappeared near Oliva River in November 2023. A coroner’s report revealed that two crocodiles had been sighted in the vicinity prior to Butchaski’s disappearance, leading to the belief that he was likely attacked and consumed by one of these reptiles.
Coroner Christine Roney, in her findings released on July 30, stated that the absence of any trace of the missing individual during the extensive search indicated a probable scenario where he had entered the water and fallen prey to a crocodile. This theory was reinforced by the presence of large crocodiles in that section of the river and Butchaski’s fishing practices, which involved close proximity to the water’s edge and navigating obstacles.
Radio host Ben Fordham expressed relief that Butchaski’s friends and family now have closure regarding his fate. Co-host Michael Guest of The Outdoor and Fishing Show concurred with the coroner’s conclusions, stating that the findings aligned with his initial thoughts on the incident.
Following Butchaski’s failure to return to his camp at Bramwell Station, a comprehensive search operation involving ground and aerial resources was initiated, eventually leading to the discovery of his vehicle, fishing equipment, and personal belongings. The search intensified after concerns were raised about his prolonged absence.
Local reports mentioned the hazardous crocodile-inhabited nature of the Olive River area where Butchaski was last seen, emphasizing the challenges faced by authorities in such environments. Queensland Police, responding to the emergency call, launched search efforts with helicopters and additional personnel to locate the missing radio personality.
