The FIA has set the date and time for Williams’ appeal to be heard by Formula 1 stewards. Williams initiated a right of review process following Carlos Sainz’s penalty at the recent Dutch Grand Prix.
Sainz was displeased after being penalized for a collision with Liam Lawson at Zandvoort, receiving a 10-second penalty and two points on his racing license. The Spaniard contested the decision over the radio and met with the stewards post-race. Williams requested a right of review hearing at the Italian Grand Prix.
The FIA confirmed the hearing will take place on Friday, September 12, at 2:30 pm UK time, allowing Zandvoort stewards to convene virtually via video conference. Though the time penalty cannot be overturned as it was served during a pit stop, Williams aims to revoke the two penalty points.
Team principal James Vowles expressed the desire for a candid discussion with the stewards to clarify racing guidelines for the future. Right of review appeals have historically been challenging to win, with the FIA often upholding the original decision.
The hearing will follow standard practice in two parts, with Williams presenting new evidence to justify the appeal. If deemed necessary, a Racing Bulls representative will also participate on behalf of Lawson. Williams currently holds fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 86 points, while Racing Bulls, seventh with 61 points, aim to challenge them alongside Aston Martin.
