It’s not just the younger generation making the move; older individuals like Tony Kenefeck, 69, and his wife Daria have also relocated to Melbourne to be closer to their grandchildren. Facilitated by a contributory aged parent visa and with two of their three children already residing in Australia for work, they have made the move, although they are yet to secure permanent residency rights in the country.
Tony and Daria have been surprised by the cost discrepancies they have encountered in Australia. Tony mentioned in an interview with the Telegraph that they have found that expenses like TV subscriptions, petrol, electricity, and gas are more affordable compared to the UK.
For instance, the average petrol price in Australia, currently at 78p/litre, is significantly lower than the UK’s average of £1.33/litre. Additionally, while the average monthly electricity and gas bill in the UK stands at around £154, in Australia, it can be as low as £95.
While many daily expenses are cheaper in Australia compared to the UK, Tony noted that property prices are higher, especially in cities like Sydney where average house costs surpass those in London. He also pointed out that the climate in certain regions of Australia, such as the southern coastline, can be harsh during winters, lacking proper insulation and heating systems.
Despite these challenges, Tony and Daria are enjoying their new life in Australia. Tony emphasized that while the decision to move was not easy due to strict immigration policies, the overall experience of living in Australia has been fantastic, with no major downsides encountered so far.
The trend of British citizens relocating to Australia continues to rise, with approximately 50,000 individuals moving to Australia in the past year, up from 31,000 the year before. This increase could be partly attributed to relaxed working holiday visa regulations that now allow individuals up to 35 years old to work and explore Australia for up to three years.
