“Traffic Warden Assaulted in Northern Ireland, Suspect Apprehended”

A traffic warden in a town street suffered severe facial injuries following an alleged assault. The incident, reported by a member of the public in Newcastle, Northern Ireland around 4 pm on Saturday, January 3, involved the warden, a man in his 30s, who claimed that a man bumped into him outside a liquor store and then verbally attacked him. The aggressor allegedly swung a plastic bag of bottles at the warden, hitting him in the face before fleeing the scene.

According to the PSNI, the public reported witnessing the assault on the traffic warden in Newcastle’s Main Street area. The warden, fearing for his safety, activated his body-worn camera during the incident. The suspect was swiftly identified with the help of the community. A 28-year-old man was later found at a licensed establishment where he resisted arrest and assaulted four officers. He was apprehended on suspicion of several offenses, including grievous bodily harm with intent and assaulting police officers.

Describing the attack as “appalling,” a police spokesperson acknowledged the impact such incidents have on the local community. Police assured they would maintain a visible presence in the area to deter further incidents. Investigations are ongoing, and anyone with information or footage related to the assault is urged to contact the authorities quoting reference number 901 03/01/26.
