Kim Jong Un Enhances Military Drones with AI

Date:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the recent testing of military attack drones and urged for the enhancement of their operational capabilities through artificial intelligence and other technological advancements. State Media KCNA released images of Kim inspecting a drone research facility, although its exact location remains undisclosed. Some of the photos depicted Kim observing a drone flight resembling the US Reaper drone.

In recent endeavors to bolster his conventional military capabilities, Kim has shifted focus towards drones, naval assets, and surveillance satellites after initially concentrating on nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles during his early rule. Reports emerged indicating Kim’s intentions to unleash a “radioactive tsunami” following his observation of underwater nuclear drone tests.

The North Korean military has received directives to experiment with nuclear-armed underwater drones by the East Sea Fleet, aligning with Kim’s emphasis on equipping the navy with nuclear capabilities in anticipation of full-scale deployment. A military insider revealed that a government agency instructed the military to prepare the “Haeil” (tsunami) underwater attack drone.

A clandestine laboratory at North Korea’s Academy of National Defence Science has collaborated with naval units since late last month to commence trial operations of underwater drones in the field. The “Haeil” is described as a large torpedo-type drone measuring around 13 meters in length and 1.5 meters in diameter, potentially capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. However, the actual deployment of nuclear-armed drones will be subject to review during trial operations.

The Kim regime has conducted various tests of the Haeil since 2023, promoting the drone as a strategic weapon designed to approach enemy vessels or ports covertly and unleash a “radioactive tsunami” through an underwater explosion. Questions persist regarding the drones’ capacity to generate the “super-scale radioactive tsunami” as claimed by Pyongyang.

Despite uncertainties surrounding the Haeil’s combat effectiveness, military authorities view it as a strategic asset for potential nuclear retaliation and infiltration of enemy strongholds. The acquisition of a weapon capable of underwater detonation in strategic locations is perceived as a demonstration of naval power, instilling hope and confidence among military personnel.

North Korea is reportedly in the process of constructing its largest warship to date, as indicated by recent satellite imagery. The suspected warship, potentially the nation’s most advanced, has raised concerns about the country’s offensive capabilities and technological advancements. Additionally, the discovery of a secret military base near the Chinese border in North Pyongan Province has sparked fears of housing apocalyptic missiles, given its proximity to China.
