Arctic Blast Blankets UK in Snow, Disrupts Travel

Date:

Incredible photos capture the return of snow to parts of the UK amid plunging temperatures. Yellow weather warnings are in effect across the country following a frigid -11C night in some areas. The cold snap has led to severe disruptions in transportation, with numerous flights grounded at Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon. Commuters are facing challenges on roads, railways, and in the air.

The wintry conditions are far from over, with the possibility of more snowfall as the Arctic weather pattern persists into 2026. Snow depth forecasts indicate significant snow accumulation of up to 10.6 inches in a 240-mile stretch of Wales and England by this Friday.

The affected region spans from Swansea to Norwich, with Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park expecting nearly a foot of snow. Residents in other parts of the UK are advised to stay tuned for updates from the Met Office.

The return to school has been disrupted, with numerous closures today as the UK Health Security Agency issues Amber Cold Health Alerts for all of England until January 9. Vulnerable populations, especially individuals over 65 or with underlying health conditions, are at increased risk due to the extreme cold.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert warns of various winter hazards, including snow showers, ice, and frost. Snow is expected to accumulate in Scotland, with the possibility of organized snow showers along the boundary of cold and mild air masses in other parts of the UK. Strong winds may also be a concern later in the week.

The snowy scenes have delighted some, with people seen making snow angels in Cambridgeshire and enjoying the wintry weather in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Brits across the country have been busy clearing heavy snow with shovels, while a robin perches on a garden fence in North Wales. Elsewhere, individuals brave the cold at Cairngorms National Park, icicles hang from houses in Scotland, and a wild swimmer breaks thick ice for a cold water dip in West Lothian. Snow has even covered a police car and stranded a train in Insch.
