“UK Shifts Towards Internet TV, Traditional Broadcasting at Risk”

Date:

Millions of households in the UK are currently utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content consumption. A recent study, conducted by Sky, indicates that nearly all homes could access internet-based TV services by the mid-2030s, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial distribution methods like Freeview.

The shift towards online TV viewing is already evident, with various options available that eliminate the need for a TV aerial. Services such as Sky’s streaming products and Freely, developed by the creators of Freeview, offer access to a wide range of live and on-demand programs through a broadband connection, integrated into many new television sets.

As internet-connected devices become more prevalent in households, the trend is moving away from traditional broadcast television towards streaming services. Additionally, the future of Freeview is uncertain due to potential radio frequency sharing with mobile operators after 2031, making the current over-the-air transmission system less sustainable.

The financial burden of maintaining the existing TV distribution infrastructure is escalating, prompting discussions within the UK government on future strategies. Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the potential of transitioning to internet-delivered TV by the 2030s to promote digital inclusion and efficiency in broadcasting.

While some embrace the transition to streaming, there is resistance from individuals like Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, who values the simplicity and accessibility of Freeview. Concerns have been raised through a petition, emphasizing the importance of preserving Freeview for those who rely on it, especially considering the possible shift towards costly internet-based TV subscriptions.

The debate over the future of TV services continues, with further updates expected to be disclosed in the near future.
