“EE Warns Customers of Text Scam Targeting Reward Points”

Date:

EE customers are being warned about a resurgence of a text message scam targeting them for their “EE reward points.” The fraudulent message prompts recipients to claim their supposed points before they expire by clicking on a link that leads to a fake EE website. This scam aims to deceive users into providing personal information and money with no actual rewards involved. Reports indicate a rise in such incidents over the past month.

Concerned EE users have shared their experiences on online forums, cautioning others about the scam. One user described receiving a misleading text about rewards and inadvertently clicking on the link, which resembled a legitimate EE site. Another user admitted falling for the scam initially but realized it was fraudulent and closed the site promptly.

The cybersecurity firm Phonely has observed an increase in reports of this scam on its scam-tracking platform, “Who Called Me.” Scammers are sending messages from random numbers posing as EE, urging mobile users to be vigilant of unexpected messages regarding rewards, prizes, or expiring benefits.

Bryn Thompson, Phonely’s Marketing Director, emphasized the importance of staying cautious, stating that scam messages are crafted to appear authentic and can easily deceive individuals. He advised against clicking on links in unsolicited texts and recommended contacting mobile providers directly using official contact information if in doubt.

EE has confirmed that they do not operate a points or rewards program and shared an example of the fraudulent message to help customers identify it. The company reiterated that recipients should ignore such messages, avoid clicking on any links, and refrain from sharing personal information.

The scam text falsely claims to offer points as a gift to high-quality users, with a deadline for point redemption, followed by a link. EE reiterated that the message is not legitimate and warned users against interacting with unknown links, replying, calling the provided number, or disclosing personal or financial details.

In conclusion, recipients of messages from EE regarding reward points are advised to exercise caution by refraining from clicking on any links or divulging personal information to stay safe from potential scams.
