Train travel provides a unique way to see the world, allowing you to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace from the comfort of your train car. Despite the common perception of train journeys being expensive, there is a surprisingly affordable option to experience one of the most picturesque train routes globally for just £13 per day.
This budget-friendly journey offers the opportunity to visit five stunning coastal destinations filled with historical sites, hiking trails, and more.
Cinque Terre, meaning ‘Five Lands’ in Italian, consists of charming fishing villages nestled along the northwest Ligurian Riviera in Italy. This UNESCO World Heritage site features colorful houses, cobblestone streets, lush vineyards, and beautiful beaches that lead to the turquoise sea, making it a must-visit destination.
The Cinque Terre Express runs along this rugged coastline, providing a scenic half-hour ride from Levanto to La Spezia. The route showcases breathtaking views, including secluded coves and picturesque Italian villages.
The train stops at Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, allowing passengers to disembark and explore each village at their own pace. With frequent departures every 20 minutes from early morning until late at night, travelers have the flexibility to craft their own adventure.
Vernazza is often praised as the most picturesque village among the five, boasting typical Italian charm with vibrant houses and local shops lining its narrow, car-free lanes. Visitors can enjoy seafood pasta at Porto di Vernazza while admiring the harbor views or take a boat trip along the expansive coastline.
Monterosso al Mare, the largest village, attracts many visitors with its long sandy beaches and relatively flat terrain, providing a relaxing contrast to the hilly streets. Tourists can explore the old town, home to historical landmarks like the Aurora Tower and the remains of Fieschi Castle.
The coastal area features 48 hiking trails, making it a popular destination for hikers who access the routes via the train. While some trails can be challenging, beginners can enjoy the Riomaggiore to Manarola trail, a 30-minute route offering stunning sea views.
For convenient travel within Cinque Terre, consider purchasing the Cinque Terre MS Card, which provides unlimited train travel along the route. An off-peak day pass costs €14.80 (approximately £13) and can be obtained at the station or online through Trenitalia. Longer passes for two or three days are also available at discounted rates until 13 March.
During peak seasons, adult day passes can cost up to €32.50 (around £28), still offering great value for access to the train and hiking trails. Additionally, the pass includes bus transportation within Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre for easier access to secluded walking paths.
