A large black bear, identified as Yellow 2120, took up residence beneath a $1.5 million Los Angeles property for over a month, causing damage to gas lines and bricks. Despite initial attempts by state wildlife officials using air horns and paintball guns, the homeowner, Ken Johnson, sought help from the BEAR League, a California-based non-profit specializing in coexisting with bears.
Following the intervention of experienced responders from the BEAR League, the bear, estimated to weigh over 500 pounds, was successfully encouraged to vacate the premises. An “unwelcome” mat, equipped with an electric shock mechanism, was then placed at the bear’s entry point to deter its return. The homeowner, Mr. Johnson, expressed relief at the swift resolution but lamented the costly damage caused by the bear.
Mr. Johnson had tried various methods, including a makeshift burglar alarm and noise deterrents, to no avail before seeking professional assistance. Despite feeling defeated initially, he was grateful for the successful eviction of the bear. Since being removed, the bear has revisited the property once before moving on.
The homeowner, who faced financial challenges due to a previous wildfire and unemployment, is now focused on repairing the property and restoring a sense of normalcy. Despite the unsettling presence of the bear, Mr. Johnson expressed relief at the resolution of the situation and the return to a bear-free environment.
