“Father of Bar Owner Takes Responsibility for Fatal Fire”

Date:

The father of the owner of a Swiss bar where 40 individuals lost their lives in a New Year fire has expressed that his son holds responsibility for the tragic incident. Jacques Moretti’s father, Jean, made this statement as his son and daughter-in-law appeared before prosecutors facing charges related to manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson due to negligence.

Mr. Moretti Snr acknowledged his son’s responsibility as the owner of the establishment but emphasized that the determination of guilt lies with the justice system. He asserted their willingness to cooperate and face any consequences. Jean described Jacques as a diligent worker profoundly impacted by the fire, and their residence is now under police protection due to escalating public outrage.

Jacques Moretti was placed in pre-trial detention after being interrogated, while his wife, Jessica, underwent questioning but was subsequently released. Jessica expressed her sorrow for the victims and the ongoing struggle faced by many individuals, apologizing for the unforeseen tragedy that occurred in their bar.

The investigation indicates that the fire likely originated in the bar’s basement due to champagne bottles with party sparklers inadvertently igniting sound insulation foam. The authorities’ lack of fire safety inspections since 2019 will also be scrutinized alongside the responsibilities of the bar owners. The incident, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals, including 20 children, has left 116 individuals injured, with 83 still receiving medical treatment.

At an official memorial service attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, survivors emotionally recounted the harrowing events at the bar. They highlighted the nightmare that unfolded and expressed solidarity with those affected. The survivors applauded the efforts of emergency services and healthcare workers, with the community coming together to honor the victims through moments of silence and remembrance nationwide. President Mathias Reynard extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, emphasizing the importance of honoring and remembering the lives lost in the tragic event.
