Upon hearing that a city in the UK had been labeled as the ‘world’s most beautiful,’ my curiosity was piqued, and I embarked on a visit to Chester. Despite the dreary British weather with rain and cold winds, my initial skepticism soon gave way to admiration as I explored the city.
Chester’s timeless charm is immediately evident as you pass under the arches of the well-preserved Roman City Walls, the oldest and most complete in Britain, spanning nearly two miles. Walking along the top of these historic fortifications provides stunning views of the city and its surroundings in a 45-minute loop.
Descending to street level, the picturesque high street lined with slightly crooked buildings housing independent shops, bookstores, and cozy cafes, interspersed with larger chain stores, feels like stepping into a movie set. The timber-framed ‘Rows’ add to the unique atmosphere, offering covered walkways filled with boutiques and shops.
Chester caters to both locals and tourists, providing a diverse range of amenities, from weekly shopping essentials to souvenir hunting. The city’s historical attractions, including Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the recognizable Suspension Bridge featured in Hollyoaks, appeal to history enthusiasts and TV fans alike.
For families, Chester Zoo, home to over 30,000 animals, offers a fun day out, while the city’s pubs, blending traditional charm with modern vibes, cater to a relaxed night out experience compared to neighboring cities like Liverpool.
Chester’s title as the world’s most beautiful city was earned through a study evaluating architectural adherence to the ‘golden ratio,’ with an impressive 83.7% of buildings meeting the criteria. Beyond its architectural beauty, Chester offers scenic canalside walks, moorlands, and idyllic parks like Grosvenor Park, providing a peaceful retreat from city life.
Despite the unpredictable weather during my visit, Chester’s enduring charm left a lasting impression. I look forward to revisiting this enchanting city, hoping for a sunnier experience next time.
