Champion jockey survives near-death experience & carjacking

Date:

A champion jockey narrowly escaped death when her pelvis was severely injured as the horse she was riding fell on her. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was assaulted by a group attempting to steal her car. They vandalized her vehicle, causing substantial injuries to her face just three weeks before her wedding. The assailants fled when alarmed, evading capture. Logan described the excruciating pain of being trapped under a half-ton racehorse as the most intense she had ever experienced.

She was riding Jumping Power Two, trained by her husband Tommy, which had been performing well in races. The horse became startled, causing Logan to fall when it reared up and landed on her, crushing her pelvis. Emergency services quickly arrived, administering pain relief before transporting her to Darwin Royal Hospital. Due to the severity of her injury, she was later flown to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment, including the insertion of screws and a plate to stabilize her pelvis.

Despite the severe pain and risk of internal bleeding, Logan considers herself fortunate to have survived the incident. She highlighted the unbearable agony she endured and the fear of potential spinal injuries. Currently recovering at home with the aid of a walking frame, Logan anticipates a six to eight-month healing process before she can resume riding competitively.

Following the carjacking incident, Logan returned to racing, achieving success in competitions despite facing personal struggles with depression and substance abuse. To overcome these challenges, she turned to competitive bodybuilding, finding solace and support from her network of friends and family.

Reflecting on her recent ordeal, Logan emphasized her lack of fear towards the horse, acknowledging its unintentional role in her injuries. She expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from her loved ones, particularly her husband, who has been instrumental in her recovery journey.
