Even though your hotel bathroom may seem spotless, a seasoned traveler is sounding a warning about a seemingly innocent feature. Many vacationers view using the complimentary toiletries provided by hotels as a small indulgence that comes with the stay.
Denise McCabe, a well-traveled individual associated with Ireland Prestige Tours, advises guests to exercise caution before using these amenities.
The prevalence of refillable dispensers containing shampoo, conditioner, and body wash has increased in recent times, driven mainly by environmental concerns.
Despite the noble environmental intentions, Denise cautions that the reality behind these dispensers can be unsettling, stating: “Once a bottle has been opened and refilled multiple times, there’s always a question mark. I’ve encountered enough instances over the years to know that it’s not only shampoo that ends up in those containers.
“I’ve come across dispensers that had an odd smell or texture, and colleagues have shared stories of discovering items like hair removal cream or other substances mixed in. Once that notion enters your mind, it’s hard to dismiss it.”
While it may be wise to steer clear of many of these dispensers, Denise acknowledges that certain ones are indeed safe to use. Dispensers that are securely designed to prevent tampering – typically fixed on walls and requiring a specific key inaccessible to guests – are generally reliable.
Denise, noting their safety, advises: “If you can observe that the container is securely locked and can only be opened by staff, then the likelihood of interference is significantly reduced. In such cases, I am less concerned because the contents are managed by housekeeping.”
However, some containers might appear secure and locked when they are not, so if in doubt, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
For Denise, the solution is simple and provides peace of mind wherever she stays. “I always carry my own travel-sized toiletries. A small bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash takes up very little space and eliminates any uncertainty.”
Travel-sized products are convenient, and there’s no need to worry about lugging full-sized bottles when on vacation.
If you cannot find your regular items in travel size, you can opt to purchase empty containers and transfer a few days’ worth from your larger bottles.
Denise also points out another benefit: “Using your own products means you avoid suddenly changing brands or formulas, which can irritate your skin or scalp. This is especially crucial for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.”
