A heart specialist who once managed the medical care of former Vice President Dick Cheney is calling for Congress to assess President Donald Trump’s mental well-being. Dr. Jonathan Reiner, an experienced cardiologist and well-known public figure, is concerned about the president’s public statements and written communications, which he believes raise significant doubts. His plea comes shortly after Trump issued a statement to European leaders detailing his personal opinions on America’s foreign policy objectives.
In a recent letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump connected his failure to secure the Nobel Peace Prize to his political aspirations regarding Greenland. Trump expressed his shift in focus from pure peace to what is best for the United States after not receiving the award, stating that he now has the freedom to consider the country’s interests. He also emphasized the importance of annexing Greenland for global security, claiming his contributions to NATO warrant support from the alliance.
Responding to Trump’s letter, Dr. Reiner highlighted concerns, suggesting that it should prompt a bipartisan congressional investigation into the president’s fitness for office. He also criticized Trump’s recent endorsement of a primary challenger to Senator Bill Cassidy, expressing disappointment in the president’s decisions and priorities.
Dr. Reiner has previously expressed worries about Trump’s health and ability to lead. Earlier this year, he contested Trump’s comments about his health practices, particularly regarding aspirin usage. Despite Trump’s claims of good health, supported by his physician Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, Dr. Reiner remains skeptical, emphasizing the need for a more thorough assessment of the president’s well-being and decision-making abilities.
