Keir Starmer and leaders from Europe have jointly cautioned Donald Trump against any attempts to acquire Greenland. The US President’s recent remarks expressing a serious interest in taking over the Danish territory have caused concern. In response, a statement issued by the PM, along with leaders from several European countries, emphasized that Greenland’s fate should be determined solely by Denmark and Greenland.
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has raised alarms about the potential consequences of a US incursion, warning that it could destabilize the NATO defense alliance. Trump’s public statements regarding his intentions for Greenland have triggered a diplomatic crisis, coming shortly after a surprise US operation in Venezuela.
Trump defended his position, asserting that Greenland is crucial for national security, not only for the US but also for Europe and other regions. The joint statement signed by the PM stressed the importance of upholding the UN Charter’s principles, including sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Both Denmark and Greenland have rebuffed Trump’s assertions. Frederiksen reiterated that any military aggression by the US against a NATO member would have severe repercussions. Keir Starmer supported Frederiksen’s stance, emphasizing that the decision regarding Greenland’s future rests with Denmark and Greenland alone.
Trump’s claim that Greenland is surrounded by Russian and Chinese vessels was countered by Denmark and Greenland, affirming their commitment to the NATO alliance. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting reiterated support for Greenland’s self-determination and its role within the Kingdom of Denmark and NATO.
Former CIA director John Brennan cautioned against Trump’s aggressive foreign policy, suggesting that such actions could strain the NATO alliance. He criticized what he perceived as American imperialism under the Trump administration and raised concerns about the implications for international relationships.
