The Met Office has issued a warning that significant snowfall, up to eight inches, will affect many parts of the country in the upcoming days.
An intense area of low pressure, known as Storm Goretti by Meteo France, is anticipated to result in travel disruptions, power outages, and isolated rural areas on Thursday and Friday. Due to adverse weather conditions, numerous schools have been shut, with a likelihood of remaining closed until Monday.
Temperatures have dropped significantly, with Marham, Norfolk recording -12.5C and the Scottish Highlands at -11C. The Met Office has issued daily weather warnings up to Saturday, primarily affecting the Midlands. Areas like Worcestershire and Warwickshire are expected to receive around eight inches of snow by Friday noon.
Remote communities in these regions may face isolation, while parts of southwest Wales, including the South Wales Valleys, could encounter challenges due to heavy snowfall. The storm is forecasted to move eastward after hitting these areas on Thursday night.
The snowfall is expected to intensify early on Friday, concentrating heavily in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Warwickshire. Northern regions, including parts of North Yorkshire, are also likely to see snowfall.
Storm Goretti will progress eastward, affecting the East Midlands and East of England by Friday morning rush hour. Northamptonshire could potentially receive up to six inches of snow by Friday afternoon.
Jason Kelly, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned, “Another snow spell is anticipated to move towards central and northern Scotland today. Amber warnings are enforced until 7 pm.”
Elsewhere, snow showers will mix with rain and sleet, accompanied by cold temperatures and gusty winds. Sub-freezing temperatures overnight raise concerns of ice formation, leading to new yellow weather warnings for ice across the UK until Wednesday.
Persisting Arctic air in the UK will create a cold feel on Friday, potentially reaching -12C, despite slightly warmer air temperatures. Notably, Marham, Norfolk experienced temperatures as low as -12.5C earlier this week.
