A tragic incident unfolded as a man lost his life in a fatal shooting at his residence during what he believed was a legitimate transaction through the Facebook Marketplace for an iPhone. The victim, identified as Michael Ryan Burke, a 42-year-old U.S. Marine veteran, reached out to emergency services and bid farewell to his family after being shot at his Missouri home, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The deadly incident occurred on Sunday evening at Ridgemont Court in Columbia when the authorities responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Michael inside the house with severe gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Burke managed to provide a description of the assailants before his demise, as stated in a report obtained by PEOPLE. While awaiting help, he sent emotional messages to his mother and sister, expressing his love and saying his goodbyes.
Subsequently, on January 20, law enforcement arrested three 18-year-olds and one juvenile male in connection with Burke’s death. The suspects, identified as Kobe Aust, Joseph Crane, Alexis Baumann, and a male juvenile, face charges including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. They are currently held in custody without bond.
During the investigation, authorities examined Burke’s Facebook conversations related to the sale of his iPhone 15 Pro. The messages revealed that the victim had shared his address with one of the suspects, who confirmed his arrival at the specified time. A close friend described Burke as a military hero who courageously served in risky missions as a decorated Marine.
Reflecting on Burke’s final moments, his friend emphasized his caring nature, stating that he prioritized others’ well-being and wanted to ensure justice prevailed. The community mourns the loss of a beloved individual who selflessly reached out to his loved ones before his untimely passing.
