Acting as a mediator, the Prime Minister aimed to persuade the US President to pursue diplomatic channels rather than resorting to force to acquire the Danish-owned territory.
Following an initial conversation with the President on Wednesday night, PM Starmer held talks with Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister. No10 reported that Mr. Starmer reaffirmed his stance on Greenland, emphasizing the importance of NATO enhancing its presence in the region to deter Russian aggression, a sentiment shared by both leaders.
Subsequently, he communicated along similar lines with Mark Rutte, NATO’s Secretary General, before reconnecting with Trump later in the day.
A spokesperson from Downing Street stated that the leaders deliberated on Euro-Atlantic security, concurring on the necessity to counter an increasingly assertive Russia in the High North. While European Allies have bolstered defenses in recent months to safeguard mutual interests, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of further efforts to secure the region.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was scheduled to meet with US Vice President JD Vance today, with discussions likely to encompass Greenland and Venezuela. Lammy’s visit to the United States coincides with an event commemorating the 250th Anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence from Britain.
In a separate development, French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned that under Trump, the US was deviating from international norms and distancing itself from some allies. Despite concerns raised, UK minister Pat McFadden reiterated that the US remains a dependable partner despite the actions of President Trump.
Downing Street confirmed that the PM, who has consistently advocated for Greenland’s fate to be determined by Greenland and Denmark alone, reiterated his stance during the call with Trump.
