“Key Peace Talks begin in Abu Dhabi with Ukraine, Russia, and US”

Date:

Crucial peace negotiations commenced today involving Ukraine, Russia, and the US. It has been almost four years since Moscow’s significant invasion of conflict-ridden Ukraine, and talks began in Abu Dhabi. This marks the first time officials from the Trump administration have simultaneously engaged with negotiators from Ukraine and Russia.

The discussions started on Friday and are scheduled to span two days, aiming to foster dialogue and find political solutions to the crisis, according to the UAE’s foreign ministry. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the future of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region will be a primary focus.

The meeting followed extensive talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Trump’s envoys, where the Kremlin emphasized that Kyiv must withdraw troops from the illegally annexed areas in the east to achieve a peace agreement.

Zelenskyy expressed willingness to establish a free trade zone under Ukraine’s control in the eastern region, discussing the idea with Trump in Davos, Switzerland. While uncertainties surround the outcome of the Abu Dhabi talks and numerous obstacles to peace persist, some view it as a positive step towards a potential agreement. Zelenskyy indicated that the peace proposals are nearly finalized and that feedback will be shared with European nations after the meeting.

The Kremlin described the gathering as a “working group on security issues” led by Russian military officials. The talks may extend into Saturday if needed. Additionally, Putin’s envoy will engage with Trump’s envoy on economic matters.

Zelenskyy’s criticism of European allies for a slow response and fragmented approach towards Ukraine’s situation was voiced before the Kremlin meeting. He highlighted the necessity of resolving the territorial issue for a long-term settlement.

Regarding the military situation, Russia has secured about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory since 2014, including the full-scale invasion in 2022. However, Moscow’s gains have come at a high cost, impacting the Russian economy due to the war and international sanctions. Ukraine, despite enhancing its arms production, still requires Western military support and faces challenges such as troop desertions and draft-dodging.
