Gene therapy could have halted the progression of the disease if identified promptly, but unfortunately, the twins, Ocean and Story, are now eight months old and may never walk. Health Secretary Wes Streeting commended Jesy for her bravery in shedding light on this distressing situation and emphasized the need for enhanced screening measures to help families affected by spinal muscular atrophy.
Efforts are underway to conduct a large-scale study on newborn screening for SMA following recommendations by the UK National Screening Committee. The NHS is set to initiate a trial screening program for hundreds of thousands of infants to detect SMA early on. The availability of more treatment options for spinal muscular atrophy offers hope for affected children to not just survive but thrive.
Unlike many other developed countries, the UK does not routinely screen infants for SMA. The Mirror is advocating for a cost-effective “Jesy test” priced at £5 per test to be implemented to prevent delayed diagnoses and provide timely interventions for affected children. Jesy emphasized the importance of taking action when there are life-changing solutions available for children facing such conditions.
Jesy, known for her success with Little Mix after winning the X Factor in 2011, welcomed her premature daughters, Ocean and Story, with her partner Zion Foster in May.
