“Empowering Families for Safer AI Usage”

Date:

AI’s impact on our daily lives is growing, posing challenges for parents to keep pace with the changes. Families are increasingly assisting their children in navigating a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to schoolwork and friendships. This was underscored during the recent Safer Internet Day.

The question arises: how can you ensure your children’s online safety in a realm where distinguishing reality from AI can be perplexing? In collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, we have joined forces for 2026 to promote The Family Chat initiative. This aims to empower families to engage in open and honest discussions about smartphones and online safety, alleviating the daunting nature of these conversations at home.

Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, alongside her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they face. The inaugural family dialogue delves into the realm of AI, emphasizing the value of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in aiding parents with children up to 18 years old.

Similar to many families, the Karleys – comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, the parents confess to grappling with understanding AI, which can hinder their ability to ensure safety.

Anna candidly admits, “I struggle to discern when something involves AI. There have been instances where I’ve been impressed by pictures, only for my kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mom!'” Even the children find it challenging to distinguish fake content, especially on platforms like TikTok, where AI-generated content appears remarkably authentic.

Homework, predominantly conducted online with AI-driven research, presents a shared challenge for the Karleys and Giovanna. The shift towards computer-based assignments, particularly noticeable with Giovanna’s eldest in secondary school, underscores the prevalent use of AI in education. The focus is on evaluating the appropriate utilization of AI rather than demonizing its use.

To guide children in utilizing AI safely, consider the following strategies:

1. Explore AI Together: Engage in collaborative activities with AI to make learning safer and more enjoyable.
2. AI Isn’t Always Accurate: Encourage fact-checking and critical thinking to verify information sourced from AI.
3. Verify Age Restrictions & Privacy Settings: Stick to reputable platforms and review privacy controls together to enhance online safety.
4. Discuss Authenticity: Address the prevalence of deepfakes and misinformation online, fostering digital literacy and confidence.
5. Leverage AI as a Tool, Not a Substitute: Encourage creativity and problem-solving skills alongside AI usage.

The Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers user-friendly materials and toolkits to facilitate conversations about AI safety with children. It includes age-specific advice on discussing AI’s safe usage, developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre, and engaging AI quizzes for the family.

Although the Karley family already prioritizes online safety discussions, the Online Safety Hub has further streamlined their efforts. Emmanuel remarks, “It allows us to delve deeper together, enhancing our support for them.”
