A traveler filmed the terrifying moment a shark bit her leg and attempted to pull her underwater while she was snorkeling in the sea.
Tayane Dalazen was snorkeling with companions in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco when she had a frightening encounter with a nurse shark. The serene atmosphere of swimming with fish in the sky blue waters was disrupted when the shark unexpectedly attacked her right leg.
Footage captured by the tourist showed the shark’s leisurely approach towards Ms. Dalazen before swiftly latching onto her leg, leading to her hospitalization.
In a brief 15-second video clip, Ms. Dalazen is seen gracefully swimming upside-down in the underwater paradise, while the shark, appearing sluggish, circles in the background. The shark then veers towards her and snaps its jaws at her.
The situation quickly escalates into chaos as Ms. Dalazen struggles against the shark, which had clamped onto her leg using its sharp teeth and suction mechanism.
Unlike more aggressive predators like Great Whites, nurse sharks are not built to prey on large sea creatures but instead feed on crustaceans and mollusks with their serrated teeth. Their unique feeding mechanism involves using their strong jaws and throat muscles to create a vacuum for sucking up food from the seafloor.
The shark’s attack left a significant bite mark on Ms. Dalazen, who was accompanied by two friends and a guide at the time. She described how the guide intervened by hitting the shark to release her.
Following the incident, Ms. Dalazen shared images showing the shark’s serrated marks in a crescent shape on her leg, although her injuries were minor.
In a light-hearted remark after the incident, she joked that the shark “must be missing a tooth.” The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation announced an investigation into the event.
Although rare, nurse shark attacks occasionally occur in tourist areas due to irregular feeding patterns, as local authorities have noted.
