Metro mayors from the Labour party have shown solidarity with the mayor of Minneapolis following a controversial shooting incident involving ICE agents. Mayor Jacob Frey garnered attention for his swift response to the shooting, commanding ICE to leave Minnesota. Video footage recently surfaced, shot from the perspective of the ICE agent, revealing the sequence of events leading to the shooting of Renee Good. Contrary to claims made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, the video suggests that Good was attempting to drive away when she was shot multiple times by the agent.
In a joint statement, Labour’s metro mayors commended Mayor Frey and other U.S. mayors for their compassionate leadership in the face of adversity, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights and dignity. The statement was endorsed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London, Andy Burnham of Manchester, and Steve Rotheram of Liverpool, among others.
Protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing ICE agents, disrupting their rest with loud demonstrations. Despite assertions by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin that the officer acted in self-defense, Mayor Frey rejected such claims as baseless. Experts in law enforcement highlighted concerns about the officer’s training based on the video evidence, pointing out discrepancies in his actions during the incident.
The officer involved in the shooting, identified as Ross, is an Iraq War veteran with extensive experience in Border Patrol and ICE operations. The incident has raised questions about the use of force and officer training protocols in such situations.
