“Over 2,000 Lives Lost in Iran Protests: Escalating Death Toll and Distressing Incidents Unfold

Date:

Iranian officials have acknowledged that over 2,000 individuals have lost their lives in the ongoing protests across Iran. The death toll figures surged significantly overnight, with reports of distressing incidents such as street executions, indiscriminate shootings by troops, and individuals being fatally beaten with police rifle butts

State television reported that Iranian security forces detained armed groups with explosives believed to be connected to Israel in Zahedan, a city in the southeast, although this has not been independently confirmed. Following a period of communication blackout imposed by authorities during the nationwide protests, Iranians were able to make international calls today.

A recent revelation by the Daily Mirror highlighted how the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps discreetly brought in Iraqi militia to reinforce efforts to suppress the protests. While authorities claim these individuals had ties to Israel, no concrete evidence has been presented to support this assertion.

According to the Daily Mirror, approximately 1,000 members of the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Units, loyal to the Iranian government, were smuggled into Iran to assist in quelling the demonstrations. The death toll reportedly includes over 100 security personnel.

One victim, Amir, was reportedly shot and then subjected to multiple blows from police rifle butts before succumbing to his injuries. Witnesses described a heavy security presence in central Tehran, with reports of government buildings set ablaze, damaged ATMs, and sparse pedestrian activity. Despite the unrest, local businesses were instructed to resume operations by law enforcement.

Residents are apprehensive about the future potential for strikes, especially following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump hinting at military action. Concerns linger about external interventions as the Iranian populace remains determined to continue their protests despite feelings of despair.

Amid the unrest, security forces maintained a visible presence at key intersections, with the Basij force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps armed and patrolling the streets. Incidents of arson targeting banks and government offices were reported, hampering financial transactions due to internet disruptions.

The crackdown also extended to the confiscation of Starlink terminals by security personnel in northern Tehran, where residents observed raids on buildings with satellite dishes. Despite regulations prohibiting satellite television dishes, many citizens possess them, with enforcement lapses evident in recent years.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei commended the pro-government demonstrators nationwide, cautioning against perceived external meddling and reaffirming the nation’s strength and unity. State TV coverage showcased large crowds chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans, emphasizing the fervor against perceived adversaries.

In diplomatic exchanges, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, highlighting ongoing communication despite the protests. However, tensions remain high, with contrasting public statements and private dialogues between Tehran and Washington.

President Trump’s announcement of immediate 25% tariffs on countries engaging with Iran reflects a punitive response to the protest crackdown. The imposition of tariffs serves as a strategic tool in compelling compliance on the global stage, showcasing Trump’s assertive approach in international affairs.
