UK Households Shift to VoIP as Landline Phase-Out Looms

Date:

A significant shift is underway in how households in the UK communicate with friends and family. Starting in January of next year, consumers nationwide will transition from the traditional copper-wire phone lines, also known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP is a more modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the conventional analog wiring. Despite initial concerns, there are numerous advantages to moving away from copper cables.

Users of VoIP can enjoy improved call clarity, enhanced reliability, and additional features such as spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.

The impending transition has been in the works for some time, yet many individuals seem unaware of the upcoming change.

According to a recent report by the telecoms team at Phonely, a staggering 58.7% of UK adults over the age of 50 are unaware of the planned phase-out of traditional landlines, despite repeated industry alerts and the extended deadline of January 31, 2027.

This lack of awareness could result in a rush of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues like equipment shortages, backlog of engineers, installation delays in rural regions, and increased strain on telecommunication providers.

Phonely expressed concern over the situation, stating, “With less than a year until the UK’s analogue landline network is permanently switched off, new research suggests millions of over-50s still don’t know it’s happening.”

For many older households that prioritize stability and dependability, this transition signifies a significant change. As the 2027 deadline looms, experts advise against delaying the switch.

Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, remarked, “The extension to 2027 has created a false sense of security. The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s still don’t know this is happening should concern everyone involved. If the majority wait until they’re forced to move, we risk chaos at the eleventh hour.”

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, added, “These changes prompt many questions for residents, and a lack of awareness may create unnecessary concern or worry, particularly for older people who are not online and rely on their landline for social connection and safety. Speak to your telephone provider to understand your options for switchover, and make sure they know if you have a telecare alarm or may need additional support.”

So, what exactly is changing with landlines, and how can you make the switch?

The UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out and replaced with digital VoIP services.

Post January 31, 2027, traditional analog landlines will cease to function, with calls being channeled through broadband connections instead.

While many younger households have already transitioned to mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still rely on their landline for daily communication, emergency contact, and telecare alarm systems.

In certain areas, it remains the most dependable means of staying connected.

Telephone providers are expected to reach out to customers directly regarding the switch and outline the necessary steps. The transition itself should not incur additional costs. In most cases, households will only require a broadband connection and a compatible phone that can operate with the new system.

However, the reliance on internet access has raised concerns, as some older consumers are not yet online. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored ahead of the 2027 deadline, but individuals apprehensive about the change are advised to reach out to their phone provider to discuss available options.
