“UK Launches ‘Fuel Finder’ to Cut Costs at the Pump”

Date:

Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. The initiative mandates that all of the nearly 8,350 fuel stations in the UK must promptly notify consumers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices, with the data being shared with third-party websites and apps for easy comparison.

The goal is to eventually provide real-time updates, enabling drivers to make significant savings over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by a temporary scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.

The newly launched ‘Fuel Finder’ program will now encompass all petrol stations, enforcing strict guidelines on price transparency. Non-compliant operators may face penalties of up to 1% of their global annual revenue.

The initiative addresses concerns about drivers being overcharged for fuel. Even a small difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per fill-up.

Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with transparent pricing information. He highlighted the potential for UK fuel prices to follow the lead of countries like Austria and France, where consumers can easily compare prices using mobile apps and in-car information screens.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would foster competition among retailers, leading to lower fuel prices nationwide. As more fuel stations participate in daily price reporting, drivers will have increased access to information on the cheapest fuel options near them through various digital platforms.

Currently, the national average price stands at 132.1p per liter for unleaded fuel and 141.2p per liter for diesel.
