“UK Braces for Storm Goretti: Red Warning Issued”

Date:

A red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Storm Goretti, urging people to remain indoors. Storm Goretti is currently impacting the UK and has been classified as a “multi-hazard event” by the Met Office, with the potential for up to 30cm of snow and wind gusts reaching 100mph. Weather alerts are in effect nationwide, with a red warning upgraded from amber in the South West, specifically covering Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from 4 pm to midnight today. The Met Office warns of “exceptionally strong” winds and “violent gusts” lasting up to three hours.

According to the Met Office, Storm Goretti will bring intense northwesterly winds to the Isles of Scilly and parts of Cornwall, with peak gusts of 80-100 mph in exposed areas. Wind speeds are expected to escalate rapidly, with gusts persisting for 2-3 hours before easing, along with a continued strong wind warning in place until Friday morning. Additionally, coastal areas may experience hazardous conditions due to large waves.

Individuals are advised to stay indoors if possible and secure any loose items that could pose a danger. The warning emphasizes the importance of avoiding travel on roads during hazardous conditions and securing outdoor items like bins, furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences to prevent injury or property damage. Widespread weather alerts have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice across the country, leading to potential disruptions and treacherous travel conditions.

Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, stated that Storm Goretti presents various hazards, with significant impacts expected from snow in parts of Wales and the Midlands, as well as strong winds in the far South West. Armstrong highlighted the likelihood of heavy rain affecting parts of Wales and East Anglia, potentially causing disruptions. He advised residents in warning areas to stay informed about the weather forecast and follow guidance from local authorities due to the complexity of this severe weather event.
