“Peckham Youth Find Hope and Community at Damilola Taylor Centre”

Date:

The Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham is enveloped in the howling wind and rain on a cold winter night. Despite the harsh weather outside, inside the center, a group of teenage boys engages in an intense basketball game with youth workers from the Active Communities Network, who oversee the ‘My Ends’ initiative in Southwark.

Sammy, a 14-year-old participant, shares his experience of the long journey to reach the center, emphasizing how it has positively impacted his life and provided a sense of security. The teenagers at the sports facility are well aware of Damilola Taylor’s tragic story and its connection to the place where they are playing basketball.

Peckham’s Labour and Co-operative MP, Miatta Fahnbulleh, highlights the lack of safe spaces for young people based on feedback received during her election campaign. She envisions a future where every Peckham child is within a short distance from a youth service by 2035.

Fahnbulleh, also a minister in the Communities department, aims to address the social challenges caused by Austerity. She emphasizes the importance of creating spaces where young individuals feel a sense of ownership and belonging to combat feelings of loneliness and disconnection within the community.

Secretary of State Lisa Nandy launches the government’s new youth strategy in Peckham, focusing on investing £500 million to enhance youth services nationwide. The strategy includes plans to construct or renovate 250 youth centers and establish 50 ‘Young Futures Hubs’ for career guidance and mental health support.

The Co-op Party underlines the significance of safe communal areas for young people as part of its Community Britain campaign. They advocate for youth services shaped by and for the young individuals who rely on them to foster strong communities.

In Peckham, initiatives like MyEnds Southwark by the Active Communities Network play a crucial role in providing positive influences for young people. Volunteers like Omar Mohamed see their work as a counterbalance to negative influences, aiming to guide young individuals towards purpose and meaningful engagement.

Participants at the Damilola Taylor Centre express gratitude for the opportunities provided, emphasizing the positive impact on their lives and mentality. They highlight the importance of having accessible youth services within a short distance to support personal growth and development.

MP Fahnbulleh is committed to fulfilling her promise of ensuring young people have access to nearby youth provisions within a specific timeframe. She envisions a future where every young person in Peckham has easy access to vital community resources and support.
