Denmark is said to be dispatching military reinforcements to Greenland amid escalating threats from President Trump regarding the potential acquisition of the Arctic island.
According to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, preliminary units are being sent to Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory under Danish jurisdiction, in preparation for the deployment of larger forces from the Danish Army and other defense branches. An advance team from the Danish Armed Forces is already on-site, focusing on logistical arrangements ahead of potential reinforcements.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced plans for a more permanent and increased military presence in Greenland involving the Danish Armed Forces and international cooperation. This move is seen as a direct response to the challenges posed in the Arctic region.
Following the Danish broadcaster’s report, President Trump reiterated his stance on the strategic importance of Greenland for US national security. He emphasized the necessity of acquiring Greenland for the proposed missile defense system, asserting that NATO should support the US in securing the territory to prevent Russia or China from gaining control.
Despite Trump’s assertions, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that only 17 percent of Americans support his efforts to acquire Greenland, with a majority considering it a bad idea. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated Greenland’s stance of remaining under Danish sovereignty, stating that Greenland does not wish to be owned, governed, or integrated into the US.
US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to discuss the matter with Danish and Greenlandic officials at the White House. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for Greenland’s autonomy, emphasizing that decisions concerning Greenland should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone.
